This obelisk was built in the “Alley” park in honor of the Romanian soldiers who did not give in to the enemy who had an obvious superiority and rejected the attempt of the German army to conquer the city of Giurgiu in the battle of August 26, 1944.

From the beginning of the war (1941) until the end of the campaign (1945) Romania lost 93,326 soldiers during the actions of the Axis Powers alliance and 21,035 of the Allies, it had a number of 341,765 missing, of which 80,000 would have survived the camps in Siberia. The figures do not include about 40,000-50,000 soldiers who died alongside the Hungarian army. The Romanian civilian population recorded 64,000 deaths, in addition to 20,000 during the Russian occupation of Bukovina and Bessarabia and the genocide of the Roma population of 36,000.
